Gabrielle Riches discussing her book on LifeTime Balance.

This book challenges the long-held notion of ‘work-life balance’ which generally considers the balance between an individual’s work and personal life. The expression has been in use since its inception in the late 1970s, and has become so commonplace and engrained in conversations, thought processes and corporate speak, that it is time to rethink the term, in-depth.

Instead, this book introduces and explores the new term ‘LifeTime Balance’. Applying LifeTime Balance to well-being in the workplace, both the boss and the employee make quality life choices that have a positive flow-on effect to the time they choose to spend in their working life. These choices may or may not affect work flexibility options.

This book considers how we can relieve stress, use our time effectively, and not only improve employee engagement, but also improve employee well-being for ALL employees, including the boss.

The author Gabrielle Riches has over 30 years’ experience in the healthcare industry, including as a Registered Nurse in hospitals, aged care and community care, and as the Founder and CEO of her own health care consultancy, Archangel Gabriel Consultancy.

Gabrielle has a unique perspective on ‘life balance’ having had a lifetime career helping people while they are at their most vulnerable. Gabrielle also has an interesting perspective on the concept of ‘time balance’ having worked shiftwork for many years, including working weekends and public holidays when needed, as well as 9 to 5. It’s interesting how people do not stop being ill or injured just because the calendar says it’s time to celebrate or the clock says it is 2am.

Gabrielle’s aspiration for this book is for the boss (and employees) to step back for a moment, take a deep breath and consider the various aspects of LifeTime Balance. Then using your own ‘barometer of balance’, determine what works in your life now and what needs to be improved.

The 21 lessons aim to improve employee well-being for ALL employees, that in turn could prevent the escalation of the premature need for acute or long-term health care, thereby improving the quality of life.

I encouraged Gabrielle to write this book because one of the purposes of my company Communication Pursuit is to improve the quality of communication in the workplace and as a result, in life. That is, striving for the pursuit of good communication. What Gabrielle’s book helps people at work to do is to transform a good conversation into a great, meaningful conversation.
